A scam is circulating throughout Cayuga County.
The sheriff’s office is warning residents of a scam where people receive a letter claiming they’ve won a $2.2 million prize from Publishers Clearing House (PCH).
The office says these letters contain several red flags, indicating they’re not legitimate. For example, PCH notifies winners in person, not by mail, and it doesn’t use claim agents. Additionally, secrecy requests, grammatical errors, and a sense of urgency (eg, “must respond within 72 hours) are all red flags.
Anyone receiving these letters is urged not to call the number provided in the letter or give out any personal or banking information. Instead, people are asked to report scams to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
