The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a scam involving a caller impersonating a detective.
According to Sheriff Brian Schenck, his office has received multiple reports of people receiving calls from a man identifying himself as “Detective Smith” with the Sheriff’s Office. He then tells the callers he needs them to purchase gift cards and then provide him with the cards’ info to satisfy a warrant or fine.
Schenck is reminding everyone that his office does not solicit money or gift cards over the phone for any reason.
He adds that anyone who receives a similar call should hang up.
If you have questions regarding a suspicious call, the office’s non emergency line is 315-253-1222.
