The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office will participate in the No Empty Chair traffic enforcement campaign later this month.
Speaking on FLX Morning with Paul Smzal, Sheriff Brian Schenck explained that the campaign is part of a larger statewide initiative.
“We’re going to further the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee initiative and partner with law enforcement agencies across the state to focus on specific areas of the vehicle and traffic law, making sure we’re keeping people safe on the roadways.”
Sheriff Schenck went on to state that each day of the weeklong campaign will focus on a different area of traffic law and safety. He outlined them as follows:
- Monday – speeding in school zones
- Tuesday – seatbelts and child restraints
- Wednesday – cellphones and texting while driving
- Thursday – Operation Safe Stop (school bus safety and targeting those who pass stopped school buses)
- Friday – underage drinking and impaired driving
“We bring this up in advance and talk about it because part of this initiative is to educate the community, and we hope that by hearing that we’re doing this, people won’t do [those things]… We want people to obey the laws, and this is part of that.”
The “No Empty Chair” campaign runs April 22-26.
