The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is warning of another telephone scam making the rounds.

Speaking on FLX Morning with Ted Baker, Sheriff Brian Schenck said the scam involves scammers calling potential victims to obtain their social security numbers, claiming they are trying to help the victim obtain Medicare or assist them with their Medicare benefits.

Sheriff Schenck added to never give personal information over the phone to someone who has reached out unexpectedly.

He also said that the best way to combat scams is to make community members, especially the elderly, aware of them and is encouraging people to educate their neighbors on potential scams.

With the open enrollment period for health insurance plans through the state’s Affordable Care Act marketplace open until December 15, the New York State Attorney General’s Office is warning of the potential increase in scams.
