The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Road Patrol Division has received full accreditation from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

Speaking on FLX Morning, Sheriff Brian Schenck announced that he and members of his staff were in Albany on Wednesday, where the DCJS’ Accreditation Council voted to award the road patrol division full accreditation. The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is now one of 189 law enforcement agencies to receive full accreditation from the council, something the sheriff said is quite an accomplishment.

“It was a proud moment for us to go down there to watch the vote… It’s quite an accomplishment; it’s a testament to the fact that we’re following the 112 standards of procedure that are in the accreditation program and that we’re meeting those policies and procedures relative to administration, training, and operation that show that we’re utilizing the best practices.”

The council conducted its assessment of the road patrol division earlier in the summer. The sheriff thanked his staff for putting in the legwork to make the accreditation possible.

“I’d like to thank Stu Peenstra, our undersheriff, for spearheading that program and a number of staff members who participated in making this happen. It will be an ongoing thing, but our people, this is a testament to the great work that they do every day out there.”

Cayuga County’s road patrol division joins the county’s custody division in being an accredited agency. While the DCJS doesn’t accredit custody divisions, Sheriff Schenck announced in February that the custody division had achieved accreditation through the New York State Sheriff Association’s Corrections Accreditation Program.
