Sheriff Schenck Anticipating Another Challenging Budget Year

SHARE NOW

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is expecting another challenging budget year.

Speaking on FLX Morning, Sheriff Brian Schenck said that, going into 2026, pressures being faced by municipalities across the state and ones unique to Cayuga County (eg, the continued closure of the county office building), he anticipates it will be a hard budget year for his office and others within the county.

“I have a $21 million budget here at the sheriff’s office, and we’re feeling the pressure like everybody and every department countywide.”

Sheriff Schenck anticipates making cuts to the budget that won’t affect public safety, such as delaying vehicle purchases. He also hopes to use opioid settlement funding to provide certain services at the jail, which are currently funded by taxpayers.

Due to the number of open positions at the jail, the sheriff added that the overtime budget is proving difficult to manage.
