The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce all of its patrol vehicles are now equipped with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) that are used to treat those in cardiac arrest.
Sheriff Brian Schenck told Finger Lakes News Radio that making AEDs available to his deputies is crucial for a rural and large county like Cayuga since deputies often arrive on the scene of a call before EMS or firefighters.
“Given the rural demographic that we patrol, oftentimes our patrol deputies are the first on scene of an emergency medical call,” said Schenck. “So, we want to have those AEDs available to try to save a life in a cardiac emergency especially if our deputies are there long before other services that can provide for that care.”
The sheriff had requested additional funding for the AEDs in his budget for this year, something the legislature approved.
“I think they see the need for [the AEDs] given some of the challenges we’re facing recently facing with emergency medical services in our community,” Schenck continued.
Schenck added that he provides his deputies with training so they are familiar with how the lifesaving devices operate.
