Residents of the Seymour Public Library District will have the chance to vote on whether or not to increase the historic library’s operating budget during its Budget Referendum and Trustee Election next month.
At the referendum, voters will be asked to approve the library’s proposed 2026 operation budget of $1,139,713, of which $1,095,413 would be raised by a property tax levy. If approved, this would mean a 5% increase over the current levy of $1,043,250. The library said funding would be used to allow it to continue providing essential services and resources to the community, as well as support current library operating hours and staffing while addressing rising operational costs.
“This budget was developed to meet the evolving needs of our community while remaining fiscally responsible,” said Clyde Howard, President of the Seymour Public Library District Board of Trustees.
The district consists of the City of Auburn, the Town of Owasco, and the portions of the Towns of Sennett and Fleming within the Auburn Enlarged City School District. Residents and property owners within the district have full access to the library’s many services.
Library Director Lisa Carr noted, “This funding enables us to continue fulfilling a vital role in the community by providing information and resources to residents of all ages. Through programs such as Little Wigglers storytime, drop-in Mah Jongg and Scrabble, multiple book discussion groups, and access to our extensive collections, we remain committed to supporting lifelong learning opportunities for the entire community.”
Additionally, residents in the part of the Town of Fleming within the Auburn Enlarged City School District can vote to fill one trustee seat representing the town. Sylvia Kott is the sole candidate for the position, having filed a trustee petition.
The Budget Referendum and Trustee Election will take place from 9:00a-7:30p on Wednesday, October 8, at the library, 176-178 Genesee St, Auburn. Copies of the budget are available online or at the library during normal operating hours.
Carr gave a presentation before the Auburn City Council regarding the upcoming referendum. It can be viewed here.
