New York State could soon develop a native plant seed supply.
S7849 would increase the production of native seeds at nurseries in the state, increase their use on public and state-owned lands, and ensure they’re commercially available at a reasonable cost.
State Senator Rachel May sponsored the bill. Speaking on FLX Morning with Ted Baker, May said the legislation is crucial for protecting the state’s landscapes and fighting climate change.
“As we try to fight climate change, as we try to make our landscapes more sustainable and beautiful and a better habitat for our native species, we need more seeds and more seedlings and more trees,” said May.
May added that her inspiration for the bill came from a local farmer.
“The idea for this was brought to me by a farmer on Skaneateles Lake, Janice Wiles, who is working to cultivate native perennials but also to develop a seed supply for native plants,” continued May.
The bill has passed the legislature and awaits the governor’s signature.
