Sen. May Shares Concerns over Proposed NYSEG Rate Hikes

SHARE NOW

State Senator Rachel May is sharing her concerns over NYSEG’s proposed rate hikes for gas and electric customers.

Speaking on FLX Morning, she said the utility provider has not justified the proposed 23.7% increase for electric customers and 33.5% increase for gas customers.

“That’s a lot and I don’t think they justified it in the filing that they made.”

Senator May added that she has filed her own comments about the matter and is happy that her constituents are doing the same, such as those who attended a recent hearing in Auburn.

Among the top concerns, the senator said she’s heard is unreliable billing. She said some customers have gone months without receiving a bill, only to one day receive a large bill, making it difficult to pay.

Additionally, she believes that those driving the increase in demand for gas and electricity, such as those building AI centers, expanding factories, or installing electric vehicle chargers, should shoulder the costs for NYSEG to expand, not the average customer.

“There are certain things a lot of customers aren’t participating in, and I don’t think they should have to pay for it.”

Senator May isn’t the only elected official concerned about the potential increases. Last week, Auburn City Council voted on a resolution formally opposing the proposed hike, with Mayor Jimmy Giannettino calling it a money grab.

“This really boils down to wealthy people getting wealthier on the backs of working-class citizens and municipalities,” said Mayor Giannettino.

Ultimately, the Public Service Commission will make the final decision on whether or not to allow the rate hikes. If approved, the increases would go into effect in April 2027.
