Following the news that Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck will not seek reelection, a second man has entered the race to succeed him as sheriff.

Rob Franklin, a lifelong Cayuga County resident and veteran of the US Marine Corps, announced on Thursday that he is seeking the Republican and Conservative Parties’ endorsements for sheriff.

Following his Marine Corps service, Franklin joined the sheriff’s office and currently holds the rank of Detective Lieutenant, overseeing the Criminal Investigations, Records, and Identification Divisions.

His time at the sheriff’s office has seen him work closely with the Finger Lakes Drug Task Force, State Police, Auburn Police Department, FBI, and the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office, among others. He is also a certified Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Instructor who has trained police officers, school resource officers, and others in how to respond to active shooter events.

In a statement, Franlin said, “I am committed to continue building a safer, more secure Cayuga County while staying focused on our current mission to enhance the quality of life for all citizens that we serve. With my supervisory and administrative experience, as well as my dedication to our community, I believe I am the right choice to lead your Sheriff’s Office into the future.”

In a Facebook post, Schenck said he is “proud to support Rob Franklin for Cayuga County Sheriff.”

Late last month, Chris Major, a lifelong county resident and 21-year veteran of the Auburn Police Department, announced he is also seeking the Republican and Conservative Parties’ nomination for sheriff, setting the stage for a potential showdown between the two for the parties’ nominations.
