Scammers impersonating loved ones in need of money continue to target people throughout the Finger Lakes, focusing on the elderly.
Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck says the only way to combat the crime is to prevent people falling for the scam.
“Talk to your elderly family members and elderly neighbors,” Schenck said on FLX Morning. “Discuss some of the scams with them and make sure they understand what could potentially happen because, if they’re not familiar with them, there’s a good chance they could potentially fall prey to this.”
Schenck also wants to remind everyone that law enforcement do NOT ask for money or gift cards over the phone.
