Scammers Posing as Law Enforcement Targeting Cayuga County Residents

SHARE NOW

Cayuga County residents are being warned of scams resurfacing within the county.

Sheriff Brian Schenck says his department has had multiple reports of individuals calling people in the county over the last several days posing as members of the Sheriff’s Office looking to collect fake debts and threatening warrants and arrests for missing court dates that do not exist. The Sheriff said these scammers also utilize emails and invoices, directing the potential victims to Venmo to make payment for the alleged debts.

The Sheriff says if you receive one of these calls, hang up. The number on your caller identification may appear to be a Sheriff’s Office number; however, technology allows the scammer to have a number displayed on your caller ID that is not accurate. Do not click on any links embedded in emails if you receive them from these scammers and do not answer them.

The Sheriff adds that if you believe you have been contacted by someone attempting to scam you or if you have been the victim of a scam, call your local law enforcement agency.

In Cayuga County, call 315-253-1222 and press 0 when prompted. You can also email [email protected] for additional help.
