At least two people detained in last week’s raid of a Cayuga County factory have already been deported to Guatemala.
Jessica Maxwell, director of the Workers Center of Central New York, told The Citizen Monday that her group is working with attorneys to track the status of 45 workers taken into custody during Thursday’s raid at Nutrition Bar Confectioners on Route 34 in Ira. She said more deportations may have already occurred.
ICE and Border Patrol agents reportedly used crowbars to force their way into the plant. Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck confirmed his office assisted only with perimeter security. He said the federal agencies were executing a search warrant connected to “felony-level crimes.”
Among those detained were several mothers of infants, according to Maxwell. Three of the mothers have since been released, but two remain in custody.
