Former Moravia Central School District Superintendent John Birmingham will receive more than $285,000 in severance under a separation agreement approved by the school board.

The agreement, obtained by The Citizen through a Freedom of Information Law request, was approved at a special board meeting on June 30. Birmingham’s resignation took effect the following day, ending his tenure with the district, which began in 2016. He had been on a voluntary leave of absence since June 9.

Under the agreement, Birmingham will receive a severance payout of $285,689—equal to 18 months of salary—by July 15. He will also be paid $14,867.50 for 19 unused vacation days. Additionally, $122,852.50 from 157 unused sick days will be applied to retiree health insurance premiums.

Although Birmingham did not meet the typical 10-year service requirement, the district agreed to provide retiree health insurance coverage, paying 90% of his premiums and 80% for his dependents.

In return, Birmingham agreed not to pursue any legal claims against the district or board, and both sides are prohibited from making disparaging or critical remarks about the other.
