Landlords and property managers in Cayuga County will have a chance next week to learn how to deal with lead paint at their properties.

The Cayuga County Health Department is holding a Let’s Talk Lead session on Wednesday. Deborah Pickering is the department’s Director of Health Education and Public Information. Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, said the event will cover many key topics for those renting their properties.

“It’s for property managers and landlords. It’s a great opportunity for us to talk about lead and then some upcoming key things that will be important for landlords to know,” said Pickering.

One topic will be a new state law establishing a local rental registry that will require inspections to identify lead hazards that may be present in rentals.

Participants will have a chance to enroll for the Renovation, Repair, and Painting training program. Scheduled for April 19, the training will allow landlords and managers to become an EPA certified lead renovator.

According to Pickering, many homes in Cayuga County were built before 1978 when the US banned lead paint in homes.

Registration is required and must be completed on or before Tuesday. Registration can be done by calling the department at 315-253-1560. The session will run from 5:30-7:00p at the Auburn Housing Authority at 7 Merriman Street.
