Most people may say it’s too early to start thinking about Fall, but Cayuga County 4-H already has Halloween in mind.
Registration is open for the Second Annual 4-H Giant Pumpkin Growing Contest. County youth under the age of 18 can now register to see if they can grow the heaviest pumpkin.
Registration is $5.00 for 4-H members and $10.00 for nonmembers. Registration includes a pack of ten Big Moose variety seeds.
Full contest rules are as follows:
- Participants must be aged 18 or under as of January 2025.
- One pumpkin per participant may be entered in the contest.
- Pumpkins entered in the contest must be Big Moose variety. They do not need to be grown from the seeds provided with the registration fee.
- Participants must provide the majority of the care for the pumpkin plant.
- Participants must make the majority of the decisions about plant care.
- Fertilizers and pesticides must be used safely, appropriately, and according to label directions.
- Participants should be ready to describe how the plant was cared for and why to the judges at the event.
- Participants are responsible for transporting pumpkins to the event.
- Pumpkins should be free of excess plant material and dirt.
- Circumference will be measured at the largest point.
- Judges’ decisions are final.
Weigh-in will be held on October 18 from 12:00-2:00p as part of Ward O’Hara’s Agricultural Museum as part of its Old-Fashioned Halloween programming. Weigh-in will begin at 1:00p with pumpkins brought in after that being ineligible for the contest.
