What’s the status of Moravia’s New York Forward initiative?
In February 2023, the Village of Moravia was named as one of three villages in Central New York to receive $2.25 million in funding as part of the first round of the state’s NY Forward program.
In May, Governor Kathy Hochul announced which six projects would receive the funding. Projects include turning two vacant buildings into bars and restaurants, creating a small project fund to assist smaller projects in the village, pedestrian improvements along Cayuga and Main Streets, redesigning Ethel Fuller Park, and creating a flexible outdoor community space at Powers Library.
Kari Terwilliger is the Director of the Cayuga County Planning & Economic Development Department. Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, she explained that work is underway to get the projects off the ground. According to Terwilliger, the Department of State and Homes and Community Renewal need to enter into contracts with the awardees for their projects, something anticipated to begin in mid-October.
It’s now down to our individual state agencies, the Department of State and Homes and Community Renewal, that will be issuing those individual contracts and contracting with those individual awardees, and walking them through the next steps.”
The agencies hope to have the contracts signed by the end of the year. This will allow ample time for those projects requiring requests for proposals or those that need to find contractors.
If the schedule can be maintained, Terwilleger is hopeful that the public will begin to see work commence in late spring or early summer of 2025.
Additionally, the village is working to put out a call for projects to receive money from the small project fund in early 2025.
