Two years after a narrow loss, Michael Pettigrass is making another bid for the Cayuga County Legislature’s 10th District seat—this time with the backing of the county’s Republican Committee.
The Citizen reports Pettigrass, who lost by just 84 votes in 2023 to Democrat Stephanie DeVito, is running in the upcoming special election to fill the now-vacant seat. DeVito, who resigned in April after accepting a job outside the district that will require her to relocate, had represented the southeastern neighborhoods of Auburn. She has over two and a half years remaining in her term.
With the seat open, Republicans see an opportunity to break the Democrats’ current hold on all four legislative districts in the city. The special election will take place alongside the general election on November 4.
A 28-year resident of the district, Pettigrass works as a supervising guidance counselor for the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. He also serves on the board of Perform 4 Purpose, a local nonprofit that supports youth through music and the arts.
