The increase in harmful algal blooms (HABs) on Owasco Lake has one elected official crossing the aisle this election season.
Republican Owasco Town Supervisor Ed Wagner has endorsed Democrat Ian Phillips in his bid to unseat Assemblyman John Lemondes, a Republican. In his decision, Wagner stated, “Ian will work with all to deliver for Central New York. The health of our Finger Lakes is too important to play petty politics, we need someone who will actually get things done in Albany. I am proud to reach across the aisle to support Ian Phillips for Assembly.”
Phillips said, “Receiving support from Supervisor Wagner is an honor. I will do the work with leaders irrespective of their party affiliation to bring common sense solutions and protections to the Finger Lakes so we can all enjoy our lakes safely and have consistent access to clean drinking water. I will always put politics aside to get things done, especially when our community’s well-being is on the line.”
Phillips has said his plan to combat blooms includes adopting and implementing comprehensive cleanup plans for impaired waterbodies, enforcing laws to stop polluters and repeat offenders, and driving resources to mitigate pollution sources.
HABs have been wreaking havoc across the Finger Lakes. These blooms generate toxins that are harmful to humans and animals and can potentially contaminate drinking water.
Earlier this month, the safety of local drinking water was called into question after initial testing revealed low levels of toxins in Auburn and Owasco’s treated drinking water. Further testing did not detect any toxins.
Owasco Lake serves as the source of drinking water for nearly 50,000 people.
