Fire crews responded to a major overnight structure fire in the Town of Throop early Wednesday morning. The blaze was reported around 3:51 a.m. at a home on 7273 Sherman Road, near the intersection of N Division Street and Lewis Road, after multiple neighbors called 911 to report the fire. A Cayuga County Sheriff’s deputy in the area confirmed that the residence was fully involved and that all occupants had safely evacuated.
The Throop Fire Department arrived to find the home fully engulfed and requested a second alarm for a full firefighting assignment. Additional units responded, including Auburn Engine 4, and mutual aid companies from Port Byron, Sennett, Owasco, Aurelius, and Cayuga County, along with county fire coordinators, the fire investigation team, and a rehab team.
Fire crews faced challenges reaching a large pile of firewood on the decking behind the house that had caught fire. An excavator was brought in to safely remove the pile. The Red Cross assisted three residents displaced by the fire.

Cayuga County fire investigators have located the origin of the blaze but are still determining the cause. Firefighters from Throop and Port Byron remained on scene throughout the morning to extinguish hotspots and sift through the debris.
Officials thanked residents for promptly reporting the fire and expressed gratitude to all mutual aid companies for their efforts in difficult conditions. Additional thanks went to the Throop Fire Department Auxiliary for providing hot refreshments and to Circle K for supplying pizzas to firefighters.
No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.
