Cayuga County Legislature Chair Jonathan Anna has issued an emergency order (see below) in response to a recent influx of migrants entering the United States, placing restrictions on housing and support services for migrants brought to the county by outside municipalities without prior approval.
This move comes after the county declared a state of emergency earlier this month, citing concerns over insufficient resources and coordination to manage the situation effectively.
Chairman Anna highlighted the potential strain on local services, such as housing, healthcare, and law enforcement, as a key reason for the restrictions. The order prohibits individuals and organizations in the county from partnering with external municipalities to house or assist migrants without explicit written permission from the county.
Those who violate the order could face civil penalties of up to $2,000 per unauthorized migrant and possible criminal charges.
