How is Owasco Lake fairing so far this Harmful Algal Bloom Season?
The lake has currently seen only two reports of HABs this season. Doctor Adam Effler with the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council says the weather may be a factor.
“[HABs] generally prefer quiescent conditions in the late summer and early fall which we really haven’t experienced much of yet this year,” Effler said on FLX Morning with Ted Baker. “It’s of course been a wet and turbulent summer for the lake which may help explain that few HABs have been observed this year thus far compared to recent years.”
Effler adds though that increased water flow increases nutrient loading into lakes which drives cyanobacteria growth in the long term.
