Auburn City Hall was packed Thursday night for Mayor Mike Quill’s final city council meeting.
Officials, friends, and family all took to the podium, recognizing him for his 16 years of service as mayor often mixing sincere moments with humor. Among those speaking were State Senator Rachel May, Assemblyman John Lemondes, and County Legislature Chairman Dave Gould. Governor Kathy Hochul and US Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand sent video messages as well.
During his tenure as mayor, Quill helped oversee many transformational projects within the city. These include the construction of Auburn’s new Public Safety Building, the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center and Auburn NY Visitor Center, and Casey Park’s new skate park. He was also an ambassador for the establishment of the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park in 2017.
“On behalf of all the mayors across the state, many of whom you got to know well, congratulations on all you’ve done for the City of Auburn,” said Peter Baynes representing the New York Conference of Mayors.
“Your 16 years of hard work and dedication as mayor of the City of Auburn have been instrumental and you have made a lasting impact on this community and beyond… thank you for your service and please accept my best wishes in your adventures ahead,” said US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
Quill will be succeeded by Jimmy Giannettino. He thanked his soon-to-be predecessor for his dedication to the city and wished him well in his retirement.
“You are leaving the city better than you found it and we are all better because of you,” said Giannettino. “Mayor Quill, I wish you a long healthy, and happy retirement. You’ve certainly earned it. In closing, I simply want to say thank you.”
When Quill gave his closing remarks, he made sure to thank all those members of the city staff who helped him throughout his four terms as mayor, specifically City Manager Jeff Dygert. He also thanked his family, friends, and all those who supported him during his service as mayor.
“Folks, it’s been one hell of a ride, and you made it along with my family. So, thank you. Have a good evening,” said Quill
Quill’s final day is New Year’s Eve.
