Onondaga County Legislator Rich McCarron is expected to formally announce his candidacy for New York’s 48th State Senate District on Monday.

McCarron, a Republican, currently serves as the Onondaga County Legislator for the 11th District and has been a resident of Central New York for more than 35 years. He was appointed to the legislative seat in 2023 by Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon and went on to win election to the position later that year and again in 2025.

McCarron is a Realtor and small business owner, and previously spent 20 years with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, retiring in 2011. During his career in law enforcement, he served as a Major Crimes Detective, Supervisor of the Sheriff’s Community Relations Unit, and in other roles.

The 48th Senate District includes the city of Syracuse, the southern and westernmost towns in Onondaga County, and all of Cayuga County, including the city of Auburn.

The seat is currently held by Democrat Rachel May.
