As budget negotiations continue in Albany, Assemblyman John Lemondes is pushing to include several public safety measures in the state budget.
The assemblyman has started a petition to include what he calls “adequate funding for public safety initiatives” in the 2025-26 proposed budget. Lemondes wants to see the following initiatives included in the budget:
- Allocate increased funding to local police departments to ensure proper staffing, training and resources.
- Remove the proposal in the state budget to close up to five prisons within the next year with only 90-days’ notice.
- Fully reinstate the correctional officers who were unjustly fired by the Hochul administration with full benefits and back pay.
- Provide more support for first responders, including EMTs and firefighters, who are critical to public safety.
- Support technology and infrastructure improvements to enhance emergency response times.
“Securing public safety is the most essential part of the state government’s job,” said Lemondes. “The fact that state Democrats have effectively ignored the concerns of millions of New Yorkers shows their staggering lack of priorities in the state budget process. Our goal is to keep New Yorkers safe. If the members of the Majority can’t do the most basic aspect of their job, they should look for a new one.”
