“Heroes Ride with Us” Initiative Honors Fallen Cayuga County Servicemembers

With Memorial Day approaching, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The office has updated its Heroes Ride with Us initiative. Launched in 2023, the initiative sees magnets bearing the names and photos of fallen Cayuga County servicemembers placed on patrol vehicles. Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Sheriff Brian Schenck said that some magnets had become lost or damaged due to weather conditions and other factors. All damaged or lost magnets have since been replaced ahead of the holiday.

“Each of our magnets highlights those individuals,” said Schenck. “We’re proud of the program; we want people to know that we’re glad that these individuals served, we’re sorry they made the ultimate sacrifice, but we want them to be remembered and this is just a small way for our agency to remember their service and honor their service.”

Schenck added that, this year, they’ve added a magnet for one of their own.

“We added Undersheriff (Retired) Steve McCloud who lost his life in August of 2019 as a result of cancer he developed from responding to the 9/11 terror attacks,” Shcenck continued. “We’re proud to recognize the service of these servicemembers that lost their lives and certainly for Undersheriff McLoud… we’ll never forget any of these individuals.”

McLoud joins 29 servicemembers killed in Vietnam and four in Afghanistan being honored through the initiative.
