The Cayuga County Health Department is working to ensure that children biking, rollerblading, skateboarding, or taking scooters to school do so safely.
The department will spend the next two weeks holding Bike & Roll to School Days at elementary schools throughout the county. Meghan McCole with the health department said the days are to encourage healthy physical activity and safety while commuting to and from school.
“The purpose for us doing it in all the schools is to encourage children to learn the safest route to school and go along with a guardian and understand the rules of the road, what the signs they’re encountering on the road mean, and how to interact with crosswalks and traffic.”
As part of the Bike & Roll to School Days, department staff will also be on hand to ensure children have proper protection and that their chosen modes of transportation are in good working order.
“We will be set up at every one of the schools and greet the children when they arrive, and we’ll be checking their bikes to make sure everything looks good, there’s air in their tires, and we also check everyone’s helmet. We do require that the children are wearing a helmet, and when they arrive, we make sure they’re fitted properly. [For] any child who doesn’t have a properly fitted helmet or doesn’t have a helmet at all, we will be provided one free of cost to the child.”
The department will hold its Bike & Roll to School Days on the following dates:
May 5 – Herman Ave
May6 – Owasco
May 7 – Casey Park
May 8 – Genesee
May 9 – William H Seward
May 13 – Millard Fillmore
May 14 – Weedsport
May 15 – AA Gates
May 16 – Union Springs
