The U.S. Mint’s Harriet Tubman Commemorative Coin Program concludes at the end of the year.
The coins went on sale in January. The U.S. Mint is selling $5 gold coins for $870, $1 silver coins for $87, and half-dollar clad coins for $54. The Citizen reports 62,777 Tubman coins have been sold since sales began.
Buyers pay surcharges for each coin that will benefit the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati. Based on the sale of the coins so far, the surcharges total over $684 thousand dollars. The two parks would split the proceeds as long as raise private funds that are at least equal to the surcharges they would receive.
