Girl Scouts Spreading Holiday Cheer with Cards

SHARE NOW

Local Girl Scouts are getting into the holiday spirit.

Girl Scout Troops 61179 and 60807 in Auburn created dozens of Christmas cards that will be distriubuted to residents of area nursing homes. 61179 co-leader Katie Green told Finger Lakes News Radio community involvement is what her scouts do.

“These girls have a lot of skills;  they have a lot of passion; they have a lot of drive, and they want to help their community,” said Green. “I think people are going to start seeing Girl Scouts popping up in more than just cookie sales. They know they’re part of a community and they really want to become active members of that community.”

After Green saw a post on Facebook listing FLX Local Media’s Experimental Rd office as Auburn’s drop-off location, she asked her troop if they wanted to participate and they said yes.

“One of the parts of Girl Scouts is being girl-led so we try to let our troop make as many decisions as possible without the leaders’ making all the choices,” Green continued. They were super excited to make these cards; they gave me a list of all the things we needed to purchase to make the cards, and at our last meeting they just sat down and went crazy.”

Cards were dropped off at locations throughout the Finger Lakes for collection and distribution to area nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
