New York State Police in Auburn are investigating a fatal snowmobile crash that occurred Tuesday afternoon in the town of Victory.
An initial investigation shows the crash happened around 2:39 p.m. on Ira Station Road. A 2022 Lynx snowmobile, operated by a 49-year-old man, was traveling westbound on a marked snowmobile trail that crosses the roadway. Preliminary reports indicate the snowmobile failed to stop at the trail’s stop signs, crossed the northbound lane, and collided with the plow blade of a southbound Town of Victory highway snowplow.
After the initial impact, the snowmobile struck a wooden utility pole with an attached electrical box and caught fire. The operator was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where life-saving measures were attempted, but he was later pronounced dead.
The snowplow, a 2019 International Harvester, was driven by a 45-year-old man who was cooperative at the scene and showed no signs of impairment.
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded and processed the scene.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
