Auburn Community Hospital’s new heart institute aims to improve cardiac care in Cayuga County.
Doctor Ronald Kirshner, chair of the institute, says it’s transformative.
“In the last number of years, if you used cardiac care, whether it be in Syracuse or Rochester or even actually within Auburn itself, you have to wait some two or three months to actually see a physician,” Kirshner said on FLX Morning. “We’ve transformed that and you can actually come to our cardiac unit and be seen the same day or the next day, whenever is convenient for you.”
According to Kirshner, if one has a heart attack in Cayuga County, the chance of dying is higher than in any other county in the state outside of New York City. He hopes that lessening the time it takes to get care in the event of a heart attack will help to lower that statistic.
Taking place in three phases, when complete, the institute will feature its own state of the art building on the Auburn campus, similar to the cancer center.
This project was made possible through $21-million in state grant funding.
