As more and more boaters enjoy the Finger Lakes, the threat of invasive species reeking havoc on them increases.
Doctor Adam Effler with the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council says they can be a driver of harmful algal blooms. He says that invasive species such as zebra and quagga mussels, that are already present in Owasco Lake, are detrimental to fresh water systems.
Effler adds the best way to prevent the spread of invasive species is to clean, drain, and dry your boat before and after using it to avoid the risk of transporting creatures, like the aforementioned mussels, from one waterbody to another.
