DEC: Cleanup Achieved at Springport Superfund Site

SHARE NOW

A superfund site in Cayuga County has met its cleanup requirements.

According to the New York State DEC, the former dump site on Town Line Road in Springport has been reclassified as a Class 4 site as it no longer presents a significant threat to the public or the environment.

In 1993, the DEC listed the area as a Class 2 site, meaning hazardous wastes had been confirmed at the site and that they posed a significant threat to the public or the environment.

From 1964-1970 General Products employees reportedly used the site to dispose of 600 drums of liquid trichloroethene – a solvent used in a variety of applications that can seep into soil and groundwater – and waste hydraulic oil. It is also believed General Electric disposed of roughly 60 drums of liquid waste in the mid-60s. The northern end of the site had reportedly been used from 1968-1669 for municipal waste by the Towns of Springport and Aurelius.

Cleanup work including removing the drums contaminated soil from the site with approximately 3,500 cubic yards of soil excavated from the northern landfill portion. These areas were then backfilled using clean soil with the top level of soil allowing for vegetation growth.

As for the property’s future, an environmental easement restricts future use to residential, restricted residential, commercial, or industrial while a Site Management plan from December 2023 provides for groundwater monitoring and soil vapor intrusion sampling for any future buildings on the site.
