The City of Auburn will seek grant funding to transform one downtown building.

City Council voted Thursday to apply for $2 million through Empire State Development’s Restore NY grant program to assist in rehabilitating the former Chemung Canal Trust Company building at 120 Genesee Street.

The plan is to turn the space into a mixed-use property with retail space on the lower two floors and 14 apartments on the upper floors. Plans are also in place to create a rooftop garden.

Being developed by Flaum Management Company Inc., the total project is estimated to cost $7,288,050, with the grant being used to address inflation costs since prices have risen since the project was scoped in 2019 under the city’s DRI Strategic Investment Plan.

City Clerk Chuck Mason had previously told Finger Lakes News Radio that, if awarded the money, work on the project would begin quickly.

He added that grant recipients are typically announced in the summer.
