The US Coast Guard has received an application from the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) to replace the Route 34 bridge across the Erie Canal near the Towns of Brutus and Cato.
According to the Coast Guard, the DOT wants to replace the current 626-long fixed five-span structure with a fixed three-span multi-girder steel structure on a different location and alignment. The new bridge would be 680.75 ft long. The new bridge would carry one lane of traffic and one shoulder in each direction.
The new bridge would also improve navigability for boats passing under it.
Construction is anticipated to last from December 2024 to March 2025. During this time, motorists and pedestrians would use detours taking them on Routes 31, 38, and 370. The canal could be crossed using Bonta Bridge Rd. The canal would remain navigable during construction.
The Coast Guard is accepting comments from mariners and waterway users about navigational safety. Comments about environmental safety will be forwarded to the proper officials. Comments will be accepted now through October 4 and can be emailed to [email protected].
Additional info on the project can be found on the Coast Guard’s website.
