If someone in Auburn says “I’ve got a bridge you can buy” pay attention.  It might not exactly be a bridge, but it is over water.

According to property transfers published this week, the city has taken the property assessed at $140,100 at 18 Genesee Street.

That’s the Hunter Dinerant.  The famous railcar diner in downtown Auburn that is perched atop beams over the Owasco River.

The diner closed in December 2022.

The diner opened in 1951 and is famed for its connection to current U.S. President Joe Biden. His first wife, Neilia Hunter, was the daughter of the restaurant’s namesakes and owners, Robert and Louise Hunter. After the death of Neilia and her and Joe’s daughter, Naomi, in a 1972 car accident, Biden and his sons, Hunter and Beau, continued to visit the restaurant. Their most recent visit was in 2014 when they were in Auburn for a family wedding.
