Two Auburnians have been recognized for their service to the community at the Cayuga County Cultural Italian American Organization’s (CIAO) Annual Columbus Day Recognition Dinner.
Father Vasile Colopelnic and Angelo D’Angelo were honored at CIAO’s annual recognition dinner Sunday at the Springside Inn.
Father Colopelnic has been the priest at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Auburn since 2012. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Father Colopelnic has worked to settle Ukrainian refugees in Auburn and send aid to Ukraine.
Angelo D’Angelo immigrated to the United States from Sicily, settling in Auburn. He opened Angelo’s Pizzeria in Auburn, serving generations of city residents. The store remains open to this day.
Founded in 2014, CIAO is a not-for-profit dedicated to promoting and enhancing Italian American heritage and culture through supporting local charities and recognizing the achievements of area residents.
Videos from the event can be found on CIAO’s Facebook page.
