Cayuga County Votes to Recognize Juneteenth as Holiday

SHARE NOW

Juneteenth will be officially recognized as a holiday in Cayuga County.

A resolution sponsored by legislator Brian Muldrow passed by a 10-1 vote on Tuesday. Muldrow’s resolution designates June 19th as the holiday unless the 19th falls on a weekend, which would mean the holiday would be observed on a Friday or Monday.

With the resolution being approved, Legislature Chairwoman Aileen McNabb-Coleman can now negotiate with labor unions representing Cayuga County employees on a possible day off to mark the holiday.  By recognizing the holiday, county employees would either get the day off or receive holiday pay for working that day. The resolution also states that if June 19 falls on a Saturday, the holiday will be observed on Friday the 18th and, if it falls on a Sunday, the observation will take place on Monday the 20th.

Muldrow, the only African American member of the legislature, represents District 11 which is comprised of the southwestern quadrant of the City of Auburn.
