Cayuga County’s 2024 proposed budget has been unveiled.
Budget Director Lynn Marinelli presented the proposed budget to county legislators at a special session on Thursday.
The $188,140,596 budget comes with a 2% property tax levy increase.
Marinelli cited increases in Medicaid costs, salaries, and health insurance premiums as necessitating increased spending. If approved the $188 million budget would be a roughly 8% increase over 2023’s $172.1 million adopted budget.
Along with the budget increase comes three new hires for the sheriff’s office – a detective, a deputy, and a clerk.
Other initiatives Marinelli laid out for 2024 would be funded from sources outside the budget. These include using ARPA funds for a new elevator at the County Office Building and using capital reserve for a new roof at the jail. The legislature’s committees will meet next week for budget workshops.
“This budget, we feel, is pretty reasonable and responsible,” said Marinelli during her presentation.
