Cayuga County is being split between two congressional districts.
Governor Kathy Hochul on Wednesday approved a Democrat-drawn congressional map that splits the county between the 22nd and 24th congressional districts.
The City of Auburn and the Towns of Fleming, Genoa, Ledyard, Locke, Moravia, Niles, Owasco, Scipio, Sempronius, Sennett, Springport, Summerhill, and Venice will join Onondaga and Madison Counties along with parts of Cortland and Oneida in the 22nd district.
The 22nd is currently represented by Republican Congressman Brandon Williams who lives in Sennett which had previously been outside his district. With its new boundaries, the district now contains more registered Democrats than Republicans meaning the seat could be flipped in the November elections.
The northern half of the county, containing the Towns of Aurelius, Brutus, Cato, Conquest, Ira, Mentz, Montezuma, Sterling, Throop, and Victory, will remain in the 24th district which stretches from Niagara to Jefferson County and covers nearly all of the Finger Lakes. The 24th is represented by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, a Republican.
The maps were redrawn by lawmakers after the legislature earlier this week struck down the boundaries drawn by an Independent Redistricting Commission.
