The Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office assisted in securing a murder conviction for a Sandy Creek man who shot his neighbor.

District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci announced on Tuesday that Alva Parsons had been found guilty by a jury in Oswego County of Murder, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Coercion, all felonies. The DA’s office had been assigned as Special Prosecutor by the Honorable Deborah Karalunus.

Following a six-day long trial which included eyewitness and police testimony, text messages, photographs, and ballistics and DNA evidence, the jury determined that Parsons intentionally shot his neighbor, Charles “Chuckie” Rothenburg, in the neck with a .22 caliber revolver at Parson’s home on June 27, 2022. The bullet lodged in Rothenbueg’s brain, killing him.

With the help of others, Parsons then dragged the victim’s body into a bedroom at the rear of the home and covered it with clothes in an attempt to hide it. He also threatened an eyewitness to prevent her from leaving the residence after the murder.

State Police found the body approximately 36 hours later and arrested Parsons.

District Attorney Grome Antonacci commented, “We commend the members of the jury for the time and consideration they gave listening to and reviewing the evidence throughout the trial. We hope that this conviction and ultimate sentence will provide the victim and his family a sense of justice and closure. We also thank the New York State Police for their hard work and diligence on this case.”

The 64-year-old faces a maximum indeterminate sentence of 25 years to life for the murder conviction. He is scheduled for sentencing on August 2.
