Cayuga County Corrections Receives Accreditation

SHARE NOW

It’s official; Cayuga County’s corrections division has received accreditation from the New York State Sheriffs Association (NYSSA).

NYSSA Executive Director Peter Kehoe presented Sheriff Brian Schenck with a plaque to commemorate the milestone.

“Only 33 of the state’s 62 counties have been able to achieve accreditation of their jail, so obviously this is no easy accomplishment and it shows, I think, the pursuit of excellence by your sheriff and your sheriff’s staff at the jail,” said Kehoe.

To achieve accreditation, the office had to meet 166 standards at the jail, including fiscal management, use of force, records retention, public relations, and healthcare standards.

The sheriff was quick to acknowledge the hard work of his staff in meeting these goals.

“I get a lot of credit for things that go on with our sheriff’s office, certainly being the sheriff and the head of the agency, the face of the agency, but this is yet another example of incredible work being done by great people within our county government, certainly within our sheriff’s office, within our jail. Each and every staff member owns a piece of this plaque,” said Sheriff Schenck.

The sheriff’s office will be up for reaccreditation in five years.

The sheriff’s office has also spent several years working on updating procedures and operations in an effort to achieve accreditation from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services for its road patrol division.

Sheriff Schenck previously told Finger Lakes News Radio that he expects the road patrol division to receive accreditation in the early fall.
