A public hearing on Byrne Dairy’s proposal to build a gas station and convenience store in Weedsport has been moved to a larger venue after last month’s meeting was cut short due to overcrowding.
On November 20, more than 50 residents packed Brutus Town Hall to weigh in on the plan for the former Shurfine site. The hall quickly reached capacity, with a line still out the door, prompting town officials to postpone the hearing.
The proposal comes after Weedsport lost its only grocery store in February when Shurfine closed, citing financial struggles and competition from larger retailers.
The Joint Planning Board of Brutus and Weedsport will now hold the hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 11, in the cafeteria of Weedsport Elementary School.
