Jonathan Grant, a 61-year-old inmate at Auburn Correctional Facility, was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday morning, according to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Services (DOCCS).
Prison staff, a National Guard member, and local EMTs attempted life-saving measures, including CPR and Narcan, but Grant was pronounced dead by a paramedic.
Grant had been serving a 34- to 40-year sentence for first-degree rape and burglary in Kings County. He entered DOCCS custody in August 2011. An investigation into his death is ongoing.
Deaths that appear unnatural or unrelated to a known medical condition are investigated by the New York State Police and DOCCS’ Office of Special Investigations. The State Commission of Correction reviews all deaths in DOCCS facilities, according to the agency.
Grant’s death comes as prison workers at Auburn, Cayuga, and Fire Points Correctional Facilities have been on strike with colleagues from around two dozen sites across the state have been on strike since last Tuesday.
