The Cayuga County Board of Elections is reassuring voters that their ballots are safe after an unauthorized individual entered one of the county’s voting sites.
According to Board of Elections Commissioners Keith Batman and John Camardo, the incident happened early Monday afternoon. New York State Police and Cayuga County Sheriff’s deputies investigated and, after reviewing security footage, interviewing Board of Elections members, and conducting a walk-through, determined no criminal act had been committed.
The commissioners added that the voting machines were set up and ready to accept ballots: however, as early voting had ended on Sunday, there were no ballots or any voting records on site.
All machines were locked in a separate room and individually sealed as is the standard practice in preparation for Election Day. The locked room was not accessed and no seals were broken.
“While an unfortunate incident, it will have no impact on our election and we look forward to tomorrow, election day,” Camardo and Batman jointly said in a Monday press release.
Additionally, both men are reiterating that no ballots or other election results were at the site during the incident.
