Auburn is pushing for more Aid and Incentives for Municipalities (AIM) funding.
For over a decade, the city has received $4,982,093 from the state’s AIM program. The program provides unrestricted funding for local municipalities outside New York City.
City Council will vote Thursday on a resolution urging Governor Kathy Hochul and the legislature to increase AIM funding. A memorandum for the resolution states that the lack of an increase in AIM funding coupled with New York’s tax cap mandates has had a “crippling financial impact” on not only Auburn but other municipalities across the state.
Mayor Jimmy Giannettino and Councilor Rhoda Overstreet-Wilson plan to attend the winter legislative conference of the New York State Conference of Mayors next week to present the resolution to state officials. The conference’s purpose is to allow attendees to learn more about how the governor’s proposed 2024-2025 budget will affect their municipalities. The conference runs February 4-6.
This move comes after the governor’s proposed executive revealed that funding would remain the same for the city. In the 2011-2012 budget year, funding was reduced from $5,123,245 to $4,982,093 and has since remained stagnant.
