The City of Auburn’s inaugural Crow Cawcus will take place later this month.

Described by the Cayuga County Tourism Office as a “citywide, family-friendly weekend with activities and experiences for all ages,” the event will take place on February 20 and 21 at locations across the city, celebrating the birds that flock to Auburn each winter.

Events include live music and performances, crow-themed menu items at area bars and restaurants, art markets, crafts and games, educational programming, and more. A full schedule of events and participating locations can be found below.

“It seemed to be an event waiting to happen.” Said Sue Waby, one of the event organizers.

Every winter, tens of thousands of crows roost in the city.

Dr. Kevin J. McGowan of the Cornell Ornithology Lab noted, “American Crows have been roosting together in large numbers in the winter as long as there have been crows. We have written evidence that they have been congregating in the Auburn area since at least 1913. However, it was only in the mid-1990s that the Auburn roost actually moved into town and created the phenomenon that we see today.”
