As frauds and scams are becoming more frequent in the City of Auburn, police are reminding the public to be cautious.
The department reports that recent scams include people being contacted by someone claiming one of the following:
- A family member is in jail and needs money for bail
- The person called owes money to the government
- The person called has won a large sum of money but needs to pay fees before claiming it
The person is then pressured into giving the caller cash, gift cards, or even precious metals via phone, mail, or courier with the courier often being unaware of the scam. The caller may also encourage the victim to lie to their family or bank to withdraw large amounts of money.
The stolen assets are often transferred to overseas accounts making them unrecoverable.
Anyone believing they’re being scammed can request police assistance by calling the non-emergency line at 315-253-3231.
