The city of Auburn’s next police chief has been named. Captain Matthew Androsko will take over from the retiring James Slayton on January 21st. City Manager Jeff Dygert made the announcement on Friday.

“I am pleased to announce the promotion of Auburn Police Captain Matthew Androsko to the position of Police Chief, effective January 21st, 2025,” said Dygert in a statement.

Captain Androsko started his career with the Auburn Police Department in May of 2007. He was promoted to Sergeant in August of 2017, promoted to Lieutenant in July of 2020 and promoted to Captain three years later.

Captain Androsko has held a number of positions during his tenure with APD. He has served as a patrolman, evidence technician, field training officer, member of the Emergency Response Team, member of the Finger Lakes Drug Task Force as both a narcotics investigator and later as supervisor, supervisor of the hostage negotiations team, shift commander, drone unit supervisor, patrol supervisor, SRO and Special Patrol Officers supervisor and ran the Gun Involved Violence Elimination Unit (GIVE).

He earned an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice at Cayuga Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Justice and Forensic Science from SUNY Oswego.

“Over the next few weeks, Captain Androsko will work with outgoing Police Chief Slayton to ensure an orderly transition,” said Dygert. “I thank both these dedicated officers for their years of service and dedication to our community. I’m looking forward to working with Police Chief Matthew Androsko as he guides the Auburn Police Department through the next phase of its continuous evolution.”
